When you find some time, I highly recommend watching this documentary, Dambé - The Mali Project, about two traditional Irish musicians who travel to Mali (where I spent my two and a half years in the Peace Corps).
It has some great footage depicting typical Malian life/scenes (albeit sometimes inaccurately - but that's a minor detail)... Most of the popular places are represented, many where I spent a lot of my time: the Niger River, Bamako, Djenne, Mopti, Dogon Country, Tombouctou and the Festival au Desert near Essakane (most remote music festival in the world, where I went with my family when they visited).
There is some great music throughout as well as a good bit of history and general information on the challenges the country is facing.
